He became the 18th player in history to reach this mark. While most of the focus was on the Padres and Reds for the second National League wild card, the Cardinals quietly snuck in and now hold that final NL playoff spot. The Red Sox have had 12 players test positive for Covid-19 since Aug. 27, including LHP Chris Sale, SS Xander Bogaerts and OF/2B Kiké Hernandez. To the Red Sox's credit, they've remarkably held serve.
The Red Sox are 10-9 since their outbreak began and remain tied for the second American League wild card spot. If the Red Sox are able to hold on and reach the playoffs, staying afloat during this stretch will have been one of the turning points of their season. With Jorge Polanco's 20th home run on August 31 against the Detroit Tigers, the Twins set the Major League record for most players with at least 20 home runs during the season. Polanco became the eighth Twin to reach this plateau, breaking the mark that was set held by seven teams, most recently by the 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers. They tied the record set by the 1999 Seattle Mariners and the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals.
Recorded his 650th career home run on July 28 against the Baltimore Orioles. He became the sixth player to reach this mark. With this home run, Pujols also became the first player in Major League history to hit at least 650 home runs and 650 doubles in their career. As much as the Phillies have been frustrating this season, they still have a golden opportunity to make the playoffs. The Phillies enter the weekend three games behind the Braves in the NL East. Only three of their final 16 games will be played against a team with a winning record.
With seven games against the Orioles and Pirates in particular, the Phillies have a chance to gain ground quickly if they take care of business against lesser foes. Suddenly, All-Star infielder Whit Merrifield becomes available and moving him could help Kansas City net more of the pitching it needs. One thing is for certain, Witt Jr. will be the favorite for Rookie of the Year in 2022. • What will Shohei Ohtani's final stat line look like? (At 26 stolen bases, he would need a wild weekend to gain admission, but it feels wrong to say anything is truly impossible for Ohtani.) Will he grab the major league lead in triples outright?
(He's currently tied at 8 with David Peralta.) Will he somehow find another new way to dazzle us? And even if the answer to all of the above is "no," it's worth taking a moment to watch him for one last time this year and reflect on an unprecedented, marvelous gift of a season. Recorded his 200th career win with a victory against the Oakland Athletics on August 18. He became the 115th player to reach this mark. Recorded his 250th career win with a victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 19. Well, they are 6-13 in their last 19 games, the worst record in the American League in that time.
Yes, even worse than the Orioles, who are 7-12 in the same stretch after walking off on the Yankees on Thursday night. With the skid, the Yankees are now in fourth place in their own division and have dropped out of a wild card spot. The Dominican Summer League, the first foray into pro ball for most young international prospects, returned for first time since the summer of 2019 on July 12 in Boca Chica. "We are excited for the return of the DSL on July 12, and to welcome hundreds of new international players into the professional game," said Morgan Sword, MLB's executive vice president, baseball operations. WGN-TV broadcasts of Chicago Cubs and White Sox games concluded at the end of the season. WGN held the local broadcast television rights of both teams since 1948.
The network's final telecasts took place on September 28 and September 29 . Effective with the 2020 season, Cubs games will move exclusively to the new Marquee Sports Network, while White Sox games will air full-time on NBC Sports Chicago. The Pirates are continuing to wear 1979 "bumblebee" throwbacks on Sundays this season.
The team wore mono-black uniforms July 20 as the 40th anniversary of the 1979 World Series-winning team was honored. Recorded his 650th career double in the third inning on July 7 against the Houston Astros. He became the eighth player to reach this mark. Recorded his 550th career double in the eighth inning against the Chicago Cubs on June 21. Games in the DSL are a teaching tool and the real measure of success for international prospects in this league is progress.
There's no longer any hope of an unprecedented five-way tie for two wild-card spots. (Turn your disappointment toward the A's for getting eliminated Wednesday.) But there's a lot of potential for drama, with the Yankees, Red Sox, Mariners and Blue Jays all within three games of one another. There could be a tie that results in a Game 163. There could be a three-way tie that results in an arcane system of drafts and conditional statements. There could be a situation that ends in none of the above but nonetheless involves a whole lot of turmoil!
This is where the teams stand with three games apiece left to play. This was the sixth year of the current eight-year deals with Fox Sports, ESPN, and TBS. Fox aired eight weeks of baseball on Saturday Nights which led up to the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game which also aired on Fox. Fox then televised Saturday afternoon games for the final four weeks of the season.
FS1 televised games on Tuesday and on Saturday both during the afternoon and night. ESPN televised games on its flagship telecast Sunday Night Baseball as well as Monday and Wednesday nights. TBS televised Sunday afternoon games for the last 13 weeks of the regular season. Fox and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball telecasts were exclusive; all other national telecasts were subject to local blackout. The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies scored 92 runs during their four-game series from June 13 to June 16 to set a Major League record. They broke the record of 88 runs that was set in May 1929 by the Philadelphia Phillies and Brooklyn Robins.
Set the record for most home runs allowed in a season by giving up their 259th on August 22 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Austin Meadows hit the home run in the third inning, breaking the mark that was set by the Cincinnati Reds during the 2016 season. The Orioles gave up 305 home runs to establish the new record. With a starting lineup stocked with its basketball championship team, the Vikings baseball team rallied for a 7-4 victory over New York Mills to win the Class 1A championship.
It's unlikely anyone on the Cubs roster will still be in Chicago the next time the team is competitive, but 1B Frank Schwindel is making a case to stick around. The 29-year-old journeyman has flourished with his first consistent playing time in the majors, hitting .341 with 13 homers, 38 RBIs and a 1.028 OPS in 49 games with the Cubs. With the Cubs lacking a first base candidate in their farm system as currently constructed, Schwindel has a chance to make the job his if he keeps this up. The Dodgers' 2021 trade deadline is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory. Not only is RHP Max Scherzer 6-0, 0.88 through his first eight starts, but 2B Trea Turner has quietly hit .303 with 17 extra-base hits and an .832 OPS in 37 games.
With those two in tow, it's no coincidence the Dodgers have the best record in baseball (32-10) since the trade deadline. Two years after the Nationals won the World Series as the oldest team in baseball, the Giants are once again proving old guys can still play. The Giants offense features the oldest average age in MLB this year, and yet they lead the National League in home runs, rank second in runs scored and are top three in just about every other major category.
Buster Posey , Brandon Belt , Brandon Crawford and Evan Longoria are all hitting at least .260 with OPS' above .880. The pitching staff is the fifth oldest in MLB, too, and has the second-lowest ERA in the majors. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY SportsThe Texas Rangers vowed to spend money this offseason and they delivered before the calendar even flipped to December.
Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jon Gray and Kole Calhoun, $561 million committed to four players in 24 hours. It sends them skyrocketing up the MLB power rankings, but the rotation, bullpen and infield still needs a lot of work. If they win at least two games this weekend, they're a lock for a wild-card berth, no matter what happens with everyone else. Set the Major League record for most consecutive games with a home run on June 25 against the Toronto Blue Jays. They broke the record that was set in 2002 by the Texas Rangers.
The streak came to an end at 31 games after not hitting a home run against the New York Mets on July 2. The World Series was the first best-of-seven postseason series in the history of the major North American sports where all seven games were won by the road team. For the first time in Major League Baseball history, at least four teams recorded 100 or more wins in the same season. The home run was the 6,106th home run league-wide of the season, breaking the previous record of 6,105 home runs that was set two years earlier during the 2017 season. Major League Baseball finished with a total of 6,776 home runs.
With his 200th strikeout on the season against the Los Angeles Angels on August 8, Sale became the fifth pitcher in Major League history to record 200-plus strikeouts in seven consecutive seasons. He joins Walter Johnson, Tom Seaver, Roger Clemens and Max Scherzer. That will be critical for the White Sox, who are on the road and the only division leader with a losing record away from home. The best hitter in the American League the last four months? Tucker is hitting an MLB-best .338 since May 9 and has an AL-best 1.024 OPS in that time. The 24-year-old outfielder showed signs of breaking out last year and was victimized by some rotten luck at the start of this season.
Now that his luck has turned, Tucker's performance has outpaced everyone in the AL, including MVP favorites Shohei Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY SportsThe Boston Red Sox must find pitching this offseason. A thin starting rotation and some questions in the bullpen proved costly in October, but executive Chaim Bloom will have the resources to fix that this winter. If he accomplished his goals, Boston can be the best team in the American League. Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY SportsThe Buster Posey retirement makes the offseason more complicated for the San Francisco Giants.
Joey Bart suddenly needs to be ready for an everyday role for a team that will see more than half of its rotation hit the open market. San Francisco boasts one of the best front offices in MLB and it will be aggressive in free agency, but the current roster leave some concerns. Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY SportsGetting Jack Flaherty back in 2022 is huge for the St. Louis Cardinals. While Adam Wainwright pitched like a Cy Young candidate, it's unlikely we see the 40-year-old repeat that success. Moving him into the No. 2 starter role with Flaherty the ace and Miles Mikolas as the No. 3 helps round out this team nicely.
Let's see if the Cardinals can improve their lineup, which would earn a bump up the offseason MLB power rankings. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY SportsGetting Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon back, plus a full season of Jared Walsh and Jo Adell, means great things for the Los Angels Angels lineup. Of course, this team also boasts a star like we've never seen in Shohei Ohtani.
But the Angels pitching, outside of Ohtani, can't be trusted. There is a ton of risk with the Noah Syndergaard contract, but the potential reward is undeniable. With that said, more starting pitching is needed.
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY SportsA majority of MLB teams, including World Series contenders, would love to have the Miami Marlins rotation. Keep in mind, this doesn't even include top pitching prospects like Max Meyer and Sixto Sanchez. Miami needs to use its wealth of arms to acquire impact hitters, the lineup desperately needs it.
Quick Notes Heading Into The 2021 MLB Draft D1 Baseball Staff Kendall and Aaron share their thoughts on players from some of the top teams and conferences in the country heading into this weekend's MLB Draft. The Red Sox come out on top here, so if they're involved in the final group of three, they'll get the first pick. If the tie is among the other three teams, it's a bit more complex, since New York beat Seattle and Seattle beat Toronto but Toronto beat New York. (We warned you that it would be complicated.) The tiebreaker then becomes which had the best combined record against all other teams—which is the Yankees. It's worth noting that all four of these clubs are going up against teams that currently have nothing to play for.
Which is all to say that we really have no idea what's going to happen here. The Twins and Royals wore Negro leagues throwbacks June 23. The Twins wore 1908 uniforms of the St. Paul Colored Gophers, and the Royals wore 1942 uniforms of the Kansas City Monarchs. Became the first team in Major League history to allow multiple home runs in 10 consecutive games on August 5 against the New York Yankees. Both games were against the Cleveland Indians on June 28 and 29. Became the second pitcher in Major League history to record two immaculate innings in the same season by accomplishing this in the eighth inning on June 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Sale also did this on May 8 against the Baltimore Orioles. He joins Lefty Grove who did this during the 1928 season.

The entire schedule was released on August 22, 2018. A five-run fourth inning by the Panthers broke open a close game and pitcher Drew Hedtke held Belle Plaine to just one hit en route to a 10-0 victory. The progress of SS Nicky Lopez has been a pleasant development in an otherwise unpleasant season for the Royals. Lopez is batting an even .300 with a .370 on-base percentage while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense at shortstop.
